Having Fun Is the Start of Learning!

At Woodstock Mixed Martial Arts, having fun is an important step in mastering new skills. Capturing the imagination and sense of adventure of our students and focusing it upon the task at hand is the way we teach.

Each and every class has a goal, be it a new skill or drill, and each goal is designed to be the next step towards mastery. Making each step enjoyable, discovering the joy of accomplishment is what keeps our students motivated.

Of course, sometimes fun is just... well, FUN! We also make sure that our classes are augmented with Parties, Movie Nights and other get togethers that are simply ways to have a good time with good friends.

Woodstock Mixed Martial Arts Curriculum

The Schulenburg Family Mixed Martial Arts program has it's roots in the traditional karate styles of the Young Hong Karate Institute - but we've not been content to sit on our laurels. The last 10 years has seen one of the greatest changes in martial arts since the invention of judo in the early 1900's. That change is the advent of the Mixed Martial Arts, a style that utilizes the most effective hand-to-hand fighting techniques ever devised. There is no wasted time with outdated forms or techniques whose effectiveness is lost to history.

Teaching styles have moved beyond the rote "do it like I do" to a greater emphasis on understanding of the physics and body mechanics. Safety has been moved to the forefront. Behind all of these changes is the introduction of the first curriculum to teach Mixed Martial Arts to the masses. WMMA is one of the first schools in the country licensed to teach the Pro-Star Martial Arts curriculum that has been developed by Master John Graden, Master Joe Brignoli and the Martial Arts Teachers Association. Mr. Graden was recently awarded his 8th Degree Black Belt from his instructor, Joe Lewis - a man twice voted as the Greatest Fighter in the History of Karate who gained much of his fighting prowess through training with Bruce Lee. Master Brignoli is one of the most experienced martial arts teachers and consultants in the industry, having taught at 6 different schools before he opened a chain of 7 locations of his own. The former President of Gold's Gym Karate topped off at 1500 students before being hired as a NAPMA Consultant, and now Senior Consultant for MATA.

Pro-Star Mixed Martial Arts

"Most martial arts schools today teach an eclectic blend of multiple styles. We've taken the best from several and combined then in a way that's fun, easy to learn, and extremely effective at building confidence."

Respect and discipline are life skills taught by most martial arts schools. Our school does more: we actively teach leadership skills. Learning a devastating front kick can be a lifesaver, but learning to speak well in public, to make strong decisions and to communicate effectively with friends, family and co-workers are skills that can be used everyday to create a better, happier life. Our students know that they have to not only learn new skills but have to teach them as well.

Martial Arts instruction has undergone drastic changes is recent years as contests created by Ultimate Fighting and Pride have shown that traditional methods are often not as effective as the Mixed Martial Arts. A knowledge of kicks and punches is essential, but without the holds and inside fighting of such styles as Brazilian Ju-jitsu and Muay Thai Boxing, tae kwon do and judo are simply not complete. Here at the Schulenburg Family's Woodstock Mixed Martial Arts, we continue to teach traditional styles and methods, but improve our curriculum by integrating these abilities with martial arts skills from around the world.
